Lesson 6-3W: Write Paragraphs that Explain Analysis of Fiction with Transitions
There is so much instruction packed into this approximately 80-minute writing lesson! But it's called "self-paced" for a reason. Students are encouraged to break up the lesson parts into digestible, "doable" chunks.
Writing Foundations: Short Essay, Lesson 6-W focuses on writing informational paragraphs that explain analysis of fiction text. Your child will follow along with the video in the downloadable student packet to learn about
annotating fiction text;
understanding the writing prompts;
selecting evidence;
using appropriate transitions between ideas; and
use the writing process to produce a final draft (brainstorm/plan,
draft, and edit/revise).
Tutor Heather provides instruction in the form of the following components in this six-part lesson:
guided notes on annotating fiction text, understanding writing prompts, and using transitions;
examples of writing prompts, brainstorming, planning, and analysis paragraphs;
a reference chart of useful transitions;
a brainstorming and planning organizer;
original fiction passages;
annotating, brainstorming, planning, drafting, and editing demonstrations;
guided practice; and
independent practice.
This lesson is appropriate for the following students:
Grades 4 and 5 Students (ages 9 through 11) who are able to write expository, descriptive, and opinion paragraphs with a topic sentence and elaboration (approximately 5-7 sentences about a topic that doesn’t require text evidence -- see lesson 5-1W).
Grade 6 Students (ages 11 and 12) who haven’t yet learned how to annotate fiction text or write an informational paragraph that explains an analysis with text evidence. Or, have learned to write this type of written response to text, but want extra practice.
Grades 7 and 8 Students (ages 12-14) who need a paragraph writing review or want practice for enrichment or to prepare for an ELA exam.
